Belle next to the truck before a cruise
Days with Belle

A cruise and a crank

One of our favorite things to do as a family is to take drives around town. Or as we like to call it, going for a cruise. It has become a Sunday tradition for us, and is our go-to for rough days. For whatever reason, it seems to calm us down, clear our heads, and make our day better.

Yesterday, we began our day with our normal Sunday routine–drinking coffee (milk for Belle), and lounging around. We can usually squeeze in close to two hours of down time on Sunday morning’s before Belle decides it’s time to move our adventures outside. It was no different yesterday. So, we took a walk to the park, and along the way Belle collected as much nature as she could get her hands on.

Leaves, and walnuts, and pine cones! Oh, my!

Belle was having such a great day that she didn’t want to settle down. She started doing what she does best–fight sleep! The afternoon was a bit rough one her no-nap crankiness set in. So, we decided it was time for one of our cruises.

After dinner, and bath time, we asked Belle if she would like to go for a cruise. Oh, boy, did her attitude change! To say that she was excited is an understatement. Our (mostly) nonverbal child was exclaiming, “go, go, go, go,” which may be a sign that we need to get out more.

Unfortunately, for us, Belle’s sleepiness caught up to her a couple of miles from home, right after turning around so she could see one of her favorite Halloween characters, Jack Skellington (The Nightmare Before Christmas). Now, you might be thinking to yourself, “what’s so bad about that?” Most parents in this situation would just head home, take their kid inside to bed, and spend the rest of the night doing whatever they want. But it’s not that simple with Belle. She has some sort of crazy super power where she can sleep for 5 minutes and instantly gain 3+ hours worth of bouncing-off-the-walls energy.

Our cruise lasted all of fifteen minutes. We got back home at about 8:00, and Belle didn’t fall asleep until 10:00. How the hell does she do it? Her attitude is also much worse on a lack of sleep, but who isn’t that way?

On the bright side, you now have this awesome blog post to read. 🙂
